When we launched our strategy in 2020, we thought that most of our focus under this theme would be around employability. However, we are increasingly seeing that getting people into work isn’t enough. Too often, the jobs that people have aren’t protecting them from falling below the poverty line.
We know that work will never be a route of poverty for everyone and that we need a strong and fair social security system which supports those who are unable to work and those who can only work limited hours during the week. However, where it is appropriate, we need to ensure that work can be a more reliable route out of poverty.
We want to contribute to reducing barriers into work; increasing progression through work; improving pay and hours; and ensuring workers’ rights are upheld. We want to see work pay for those who are experiencing and at risk of in-work poverty, and for those who are experiencing barriers to (re-)entering the labour market.
