Voices: The Welcoming

In our Voices series, we share the stories and opinions from our funded organisations that are helping to find solutions to poverty and trauma in Scotland. The latest group is the The Welcoming, a Scottish charity dedicated to supporting asylum seekers, refugees and migrants in Edinburgh.

"When asylum seekers or migrants come to a new city like Edinburgh, that exacerbates the trauma because of the lack of language or lack of knowing where to access services. One of the things that we have learned is that traumatised people need a holistic approach."

How The Welcoming's work fits with our 2020-2030 strategy

"We know that Refugees and Asylum Seekers are at higher risk of experiencing poverty, poor mental health and isolation, alongside the added pressure of experiencing a new environment which can come with multiple barriers. The Welcoming aims to connect existing communities with New Scots to help support integration by building resilience of individuals, introducing learning opportunities to access training and employment, and providing essential resources and information to ensure people are informed of their rights.

Their community led approach ensures that there are opportunities for connecting local people and New Scots through social and cultural opportunities, providing a safe and supportive environment for all individuals.

We're pleased to be supporting The Welcoming and look forward to learning from them as their work progresses."
