The climate crisis affects us all – but not equally. Across Scotland and beyond, it’s often the people already living with poverty or disadvantage who are hardest hit by its impacts. That’s why, for us as a funder focused on reducing poverty and trauma, taking action on climate change isn’t just an environmental responsibility – it’s a social one too.
Back in 2021, we signed up to the Association of Charitable Foundations’ (ACF) Funder Commitment on Climate Change – a pledge to take meaningful action across six key areas, from our funding and investments to our day-to-day operations. Each year, we report on our progress, helping us stay accountable and focused.
We’re pleased to share our latest report, outlining some of the steps we’ve taken over the past year, including:
- Supporting Greener Communities
In September 2024, we launched our new Transport Grants, offering £5,000–£20,000 per year for up to three years. These grants put sustainability at their heart, prioritising projects that promote more environmentally friendly ways of getting around – including electric vehicles, shared transport, and active travel.
So far, 71% of the grants we’ve awarded have clear environmental benefits. These include:
-
An electric delivery van for a furniture re-use charity, supporting low-income families as they move into new homes.
-
A community minibus shared across local groups, helping cut the need for separate vehicles and reducing emissions.
- Moving Towards Net Zero
In March 2024, our Board approved a major step forward – our ambition to achieving Net Zero across our listed investment portfolio by 2040.
This decision followed detailed work by our investment committee and a revised Investment Policy, which is now available on our website. Since then, we’ve:
-
Increased our holdings in renewable and low-carbon infrastructure funds.
-
Disinvested from fossil fuels, with no remaining exposure in our portfolio.
-
Reduced the carbon intensity of our portfolio by 53% since December 2021.
What’s Next?
As part of our next three-year business plan, we’re building a more comprehensive climate action plan and reporting framework. This will help us stay on track and offer better support to both our staff and grant holders in making positive environmental choices.

Since its launch in 2019, over 130 charitable foundations in the UK – spanning all sizes and missions – have signed the Funder Commitment on Climate Change. We’re proud to be part of this growing movement for change.
